PANS and PANDAS

If you notice a sudden change in behaviour or personality in your child, the condition might be PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections).  Various symptoms can present simultaneously and intensely.  They might include OCD-type behaviours, selective eating or food refusal, Tics, anxiety, depression, irritability, aggression.

It’s important to be aware that there is ongoing controversy around PANS/PANDAS and the NHS and NICE Guidelines currently do not recognise these conditions.  The Royal College of Paediatricians and Psychiatrists have said that based on the evidence so far, any proposed treatment cannot be supported.

PANS and PANDAS

PANDAS is a condition that is triggered by a Streptococcal infection. A child who is usually happy at home and at school, can from one day to the next become anxious and obsessive. Symptoms may be similar to those of OCD. The mother in this film describes the progression of the illness, how it affected her daughter emotionally and how they sought a diagnosis and support.
