PANS and PANDAS
Children with PANDAS (Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections) may have a sudden change in behaviour or personality and experience severe anxiety. You may notice OCD-type symptoms, physical changes such as tics, social and emotional changes such as communication difficulties affecting friendships. Handwriting can quickly deteriorate, and children may be struggling to focus, retain information and to follow instructions.
It’s important to be aware that there is ongoing controversy around PANS/PANDAS and the NHS and NICE Guidelines currently do not recognise these conditions. The Royal College of Paediatricians and Psychiatrists have said that based on the evidence so far, any proposed treatment cannot be supported.
